Dealing with Dry Skin and Cracked Heels This Winter

Winter is hard on your feet. Cold, dry air and indoor heating can strip moisture from your skin, leading to uncomfortable dryness and painful cracks—especially on your heels. Fortunately, with the right care, you can keep your feet soft, smooth, and healthy all winter long.
1. Moisturize Regularly
Hydration is key to preventing and treating dry, cracked skin. Use a thick cream, oil, or balm designed for feet, as these are often enriched with ingredients like shea butter, urea, or ceramides that lock in moisture. Apply after bathing, when your skin is still slightly damp, to help seal in hydration.
2. Exfoliate for Smooth Skin
Dead skin can build up on your heels, making cracks worse. Gently exfoliate once or twice a week using a pumice stone or foot scrub to remove rough patches. Avoid over-exfoliating, as it can irritate the skin and worsen dryness.
3. Create a Nightly Foot Care Routine
Before bed, pamper your feet:
  • Apply a generous amount of foot cream or balm.
  • Slip on cotton or moisture-wicking socks to help lock in hydration overnight.
  • This simple routine can make a big difference in preventing cracked heels.
4. Choose Socks and Footwear Wisely
Wear socks made of breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics to keep feet dry and warm. Avoid walking barefoot on cold floors, and choose shoes that fit well to prevent rubbing and irritation.
5. Stay Hydrated and Humidify Your Home
Hydration isn’t just about what you put on your skin—it’s also about what you put in your body. Drink plenty of water to support skin health. Consider using a humidifier to combat dry indoor air, which can also benefit your skin.

WHEN TO SEE A PODIATRIST:
If cracked heels become deep, bleed, or cause pain, it’s time to consult a podiatrist. Severe cracks can lead to infections and require professional treatment.
With a little extra care, you can protect your feet from winter’s harsh conditions and keep them looking and feeling their best!
