Many benign and cancerous skin lesions can appear on the feet and lower extremities. If the size, shape, color, or texture of the lesion has changed, your physician may recommend a biopsy of the lesion to rule out skin cancer. Biopsies are important to confirm and identify the type of skin cancer. Common skin cancers of the lower extremity include melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal carcinoma. Early detection is the key to successful treatment.

At Northern Illinois Foot and Ankle Specialists, our physicians provide in-office biopsies under local anesthesia. The skin lesion is sent directly to the pathology lab for confirmation and diagnosis of the lesion. The results of the biopsy, as well as a definitive plan, will be discussed at your follow up.
